Religion & Equality B604
PREJUDICE AND EQUALITY
KEY TERMS
Prejudice: Pre-judged negative thought or opinion towards a person or group of people, without any real
knowledge of that person as an individual
Discrimination: Acting upon ones prejudice, treating someone badly, or in a different way, because of
prejudice against them
Racism/Sexism/Ageism: Discriminate wholly against a certain race; gender or age group
The extent to which these views are held/actions are taken can vary hugely from very minor to extreme
Equality: Being equal to others in treatment and in value
Community: The people who live in a certain place and often share religious or cultural characteristics
CAUSES OF PREJUDICE
Ignorance: Lack of understanding between cultures leading people to think they are `lesser' in some way
Stereotyping: Being prejudiced against one person because they belong to a certain group
Scapegoating: Blaming certain groups for problems in society
Media: The media can portray different groups as having negative characteristics, causing people to judge
them without fully knowing them as individuals
RACISM
Racism is based on stereotypes, fixed and standardised images of groups of people, used to promote
negative thoughts and actions
The media may, often unwillingly, fuel these negative stereotypes which biases people
There have been many instances of racial discrimination in the UK, sometimes due to racial segregation.
This has led to riots and murders
Racism lads to further segregation and hostility
The government is trying to promote the idea of being `British' as something that transcends racial
and cultural differences, in an attempt to improve community cohesion
The race relations act was passed in 1976 making it illegal to discrimination on the grounds of
nationality, colour or race or to publish anything which could incite (cause) racial hatred
SEX DISCRIMINATION
In the past, societies have been very male-dominated; the role of women was to stay at home, taking care
of the house and family. The second world war was the main cause in breaking these views, with women
encouraged to work in factories after the war women did not want to return to being `second-class citizens'
