Votes at 16

Advantages

  • other things you can do at 16: age of consent / pay tax / join army / medical consent / join a trade union - why not vote?
  • would empower 16 and 17 year olds and give them more influence over their own political future
  • 16 and 17 year olds have been granted the vote in Scotland and Wales - this is inconsistent and England should lower the voting age to level the play field across the UK
  • in the 2014 Scottish indyref, 75% of 16-17 year olds who were registered to vote turned out
  • there is a lot of political activism online, parties are spending a lot of money on social media ads (eg Tories spent £2million on Facebook ads in 2015) - young people are likely to use the internet

Disadvantages

  • many 16 year olds do not earn enough money to pay tax / cannot go on the frontlines in the army / can no longer get married at 18 - too immature
  • voter turnout is incredibly low for 18-24 year olds so this suggests the same would be the case for 16-17 year olds
  • a study by the BBC suggests that for the 2021 local elections, only 46% of 16-17 year olds had registered to vote
  • this is less than the average of 85% but more than 18-24 year olds at 5t4%
  • there is the danger of 'echo chambers' - ie the idea that people only see political views similar to their own - this is particularly the case with apps like TikTok which use a specific algorithm to tailor content --- there is also the danger than young people will be taken in by terrorist or extremist ideologies which may be found online

Evaluation

It is shown that parties that are typically centrist or left-wing, ie Labour, Lib Dem, Greens, SNP think that lowering the voting age is a good idea - because they would pick up votesMore right leaning parties such as Conservatives or UKIP do not like the idea of lowering the voting age because they would not gain votes from this age category
