Support for Tyrone from within Ireland

Advantages

  • Supported by other Ulster chieftains
  • E.g Hugh Roe O'Donnell, Hugh Maguire
  • His forces were supplemented by English deserters, these were irishmen who had been recruited by the English, but found their loyalties laid with Ireland
  • rebellion spread to Connaught in 1595
  • Leinster and Munster joined in 1598
  • Key supporters -- James FitzThomas  and Florence MacCarthy
  • 1596, rebels claimed to have 6,000 foot soldiers and 1,200 cavalry
  • Rebel forces outnumbered the English forces until 1599

Disadvantages

  • Centred in the northern province of Ulster
  • National uprising envisioned by O'Neill never materialised
  • Uprisings in other provinces were not always fully co-ordinated with military movements elsewhere
  • Mountjoy's policies and tactics demoralised most of Irish peasantry who were starving and homeless

Evaluation

If the rebellion had spread to all the provinces in Ireland, and it had been a joint effort overall. there was a very real chance the rebellion would've succeeded
