- Causes
- Elizabeth's plantations in Connaught and Munster
- Breaking up the Gaelic chieftains' power
- Government neglect - war against Spain meant money was short
- Hugh O'Neil had been in contact with Spain since 1590
- Tyrone drew up 22 articles which included giving Catholics control of the government of Ireland
- Arguments it was dangerous
- Tyrone raised support from eveyr Irish province - contrast to Munster Rising and O'Neill
- 1596 - Rebel armies had reached 6,000
- Irish had victories at Clontibret (1595) and Yellow Ford (1598)
- Elizabeth diverted troops from the Netherlands to Ireland
- Tyrone also had Redshanks and Irish buanadha
- Arguments it wasn't dangerous
- Spanish troops only arrived in 1601
- There were little - 3,500 and easily defeated at Kinsale
- The revolt was no immediate threat to Elizabeth
- All the fortified cities sided with the English
- Irish military victories not particulary decisive
- Only Yellow Ford saw large troops killed - 2000
- Spanish troops only arrived in 1601

- 1595 - Tyrone defeared Baganel at Clontibret and began negotiating with Philip of Spain and the Pope
- 1596 - Spain sends money and munitions - no men
- Essex and Howard destory ships at Cadiz in July
- 1597 - Spanish Armada wrecked at sea by a storm
- 1598 - Tyrone laid seige to Blackwater Fort and won at Yellow Ford
- By the end of 1598 only Leinster was in English hands
- 1599 - third armada sent by Spanish - bad weather forced them to double back
- 1600 - Mountjoy replaces Essex in Ireland and began to defeat the Irish
- 3,400 Spanish landed in Kinsale in 1602
- Irish inflicted a loss of 2,00 men - all Spanish forces defeated
- 1603 Tyrone submiited - he recovered all of his pre-revolt lands
