strengths and weaknesses o the teleological argument

Advantages

  • Aesthetic argument which means that people can experience it and understand it as well.
  • People say that Evil is necessary for the world to have order otherwise it would be a toy world.
  • Can relate to the theory of evolution as God could have designed the world so that it evolves.

Disadvantages

  • Hume From looking at the world you cannot conclude whether God is clever, or good, or loving. he could have been stupid simply copying someones idea or stumbled on this design after countless trials and errors.
  • Characteristics of a watch maybe obvious that it has been designed, however they are not obvious in the world. we would conclude the watch was designed because there is nothing like it in nature.
  • Hume believed order was necessary. every world will look designed because if it wasn't it would be chaotic and we wouldn't survive.
  • Mill- " In sober truth, nearly all the things which men are hanged or imprisoned for to one other are natures everyday performances"
  • Mill-"A single hurricane destroys the hopes of a season; a flight of locusts desolates a district; a trifling chemical change in an edible root starves a million people."
  • Mill- "if we are not obliged to believe the animal creation to be the work of a demon, it is because we need not suppose it to have been made by a being of infinite power."

Evaluation

Overall God could not have designed the world as there is no sufficient evidence to prove that he could have possibly designed the world or be an omnibenevolent designer. How can you base an argument on what you you look at without any evidence to support you. As well Swinburne says that you should not questions the answer as the right one could be staring you in the face, however that is just accepting an easy way out instead of actually trying to figure out a real answer.
