SP Prejudice Critical Analysis

Advantages

  • Understand prejudice in the social context that it is imbedded in, to make meaningful predictions and changes
  • Understand individual reactions to social world
  • Helps understand how prejudice can impact opportunities, success and life satisfaction
  • Good understanding of the impact of prejudice in stereotype threat and stigma
  • Implicit association tests provide a measure free of social-constraints

Disadvantages

  • Emphasis on individual differences means that group processes are sometimes ignored
  • Many theories and so no unified understanding
  • Theories only apply to certain subtypes and may only impact when other conditions are satisfied e.g. self-identity threatened
  • Interne means that prejudice is easier to express but harder to track due to scope of social media and fast-paced changes
  • Prejudice is often hidden and so can be hard to detect

Evaluation

Current theories can often only explain certain situations of prejudice, making it difficult to understand key group processes involved. However, altogether they provide a comprehensive understand of the impact and potential mechanisms behind prejudice.
