Sociological reasons 'best'? A02

Advantages

  • Sociological reasons are powerful and relative deprivation theory has much support e.g. celebrities joining NRMS such as Scientology.
  • Belief systems are often strange and would be unlikely to attract members.
  • Been on the rise when rapid social change has occurred e.g. capitalist, consumerist society. Wilson-> rise of methodism in 19th century a response to rapid social change resulting from industrial revolution.

Disadvantages

  • However, this is not relevant to all members of NRMS- might just be 'best' explanation for these.
  • Have distinctive theology which is obviously attractive to some people particularly as mainstream religions are complex and cannot offer definite answers to moral issues like NRMS can.
  • Been on the rise in past century when recent historical events can be interpreted as signs of 'end times' seems like people are joining on the basis of this millenarian belief.

Evaluation

Sociological clearly a relevant explanation but seems unlikely that it is the 'best' as most people dedicate their whole lives to NRMS, obviously hold strong beliefs. Although, some would argue that the sense of belonging to a community/family is enough for marginalised people and people become brain washed over time by charismatic leader into beliefs, but reason for joining NRMS is sociological.
