Single Transferable Vote

Advantages

  • Less wasted votes
  • Highly proportional
  • More satisfaction with outcome
  • No safe seats - parties must campaign everywhere
  • Voters rank candidates - unpopular candidates won't gain power

Disadvantages

  • Highly populated areas - large constituencies
  • Time consuming
  • Expensive
  • Complex - causes confusion
  • More coalitions - difficulty negotiating

Evaluation

Although STV comes with its disadvantages, it provides much more fair, proportional representation in comparison to other electoral systems. The electorate are generally more content with the result in proportional systems, making this one of the fairest kinds.
