Should Women Be Allowed to Be Priests Within the Catholic Church?

Advantages

  • "There is no difference between...men and women, for you are all one in Jesus Christ" - suggests that women have just as much right to be accepted into priesthood as men
  • "God created man in his image...male and female" - women should be treated the same as men as this was God's intention
  • Modern society accepts that men and women are equal.  The Church needs to embrace this in order to maintain its following

Disadvantages

  • Although Jesus treated women with respect, all of his disciples were men. This shows that he didn't want them to have authority
  • "Wives, submit to your husbands" - Colossians.  This suggests that women shouldn't have any authority in the Church
  • "The women should stay silent in the Churches" If women can't speak in Church, then they surely shouldn't be priests

Evaluation

Women should be allowed to be priests within the Catholic Church.  Many of the teachings from the Bible that suggest that men are superior to women are taken from a time in which women were expected to fulfill a domestic role and did not go to school.  In our modern society, women receive the same education as men, so they will have the same amount of knowledge on religious matters.
