Reproduction hormones

Causes

  • 1) FSH
  • 2) Estrogen
  • 3) LH
  • 4) Progesterone
  • 5) Oxytocin

Effects

  • 1) stimulates development of follicle in ovary + stimulates it to secrete oestrogen
  • 2) Repairs and thickens endometrium + stimulates follicle cells to have more FSH receptors at the start (positive feedback). After critical level of oestrogen, it stimulates LH but inhibits FSH and then it inhibits both (negative feedback).
  • 3) Stimulates ovulation, formation of corpus luteum
  • 4) is stimulated by corpus luteum, thickens endometrium after ovulation, prevents it from collapsing and inhibits LH and FSH with oestrogen (negative feedback). When giving birth, progesterone is inhibited by oestrogen. Progesterone inhibits oxytocin throughout pregnancy
  • 5) used when giving birth. Is stimulated by stretch receptors. Estrogen would then inhibit progesterone and make the myometrium more sensitive to oxytocin which makes the uterus contract.

Overall summary

The hormones in reproduction all interact with one another, often using negative or positive feedback.
