Psychodynamic Approach Evaluation (AO3)

Advantages

  • Real World Application: psychotherapy
  • Explains development, linking childhood experiences to later experiences

Disadvantages

  • Psychoanalysis is inappropriate for serious mental disorders as patients can't articulate
  • Subjective: Little Hans' father wanted theory to work but it can be generalised
  • Unfalsifiable: hard to prove and test
  • Determinism: opposed free will with extreme views.

Evaluation

The psychodynamic approach has strengths with it being linked to psychotherapy, the beginning of counselling, and enabling us to look more deeply into how childhood experience experiences can explain adult experiences. However, it is very extreme and falsifiable. The theory can't be proved and believes that humans have no free will.
