Theory

Strengths

  • The emergence of left realism is due to what was changing political circumstances
  • The emergence of the left realism thought was partly due to the impact of feminism on radical theorising
  • Left realists criticise much of radical criminology as being left idealism
  • Blaming the poor was like blaming the victim and we should be more occupied by crimes by the powerful
  • There are four key problems with radical criminology that left realists identify
  • TIERNEY
  • Left realism has four main strands
  • YOUNG
  • Left realism has six aims in its work

Keywords and References

Weaknesses

  • NEWBURN, T. (2013) Criminology. 2nd Ed. Oxon: Routledge.
  • They take crime largely at face value
  • It fails to look at the political and ideological sources of crime
  • It fails to look at crimes of the powerful.
  • Because it does not look at crimes of the powerful it is also criticised for not having a model of crime which explains the volume of crime
  • They reject the idea that even a small amount of working class crime could be due to limited opportunities or social arrangements
