Henry VIII Foreign Policy Goals and the Extent to Which they were Achieved

Causes

  • War with France in an attempt to reclaim the English Stake
  • Glory (similar to medieval monarchs e.g. Henry V)
  • Create Peace in Europe
  • Secure the Tudor dynasty through foreign marriage

Effects

  • Henry already controlled Calais and managed to capture both Tournai (1513) and Boulogne (1544). However both were returned to the French around 5 years later (1519 and 1551)
  • Henry went to battle in the first war against France and helped capture Tournai
  • Treaty of London (1518) - united most of Europe against the threat of the Ottomans, and brought peace for a few years. However wars eventually broke out again. Also was really a result of Wolsey not Henry
  • Henry had 3 children, only one of which was from a foreign marriage (Mary-Catherine). His 2 daughters were initially made illegitimate due to divorce etc but were able to claim the throne after Edward died
