Functionalism (25)

Advantages

P: overcomes circularity; E: doesn't require explanation of mental states from other mental states
P: multiple realisability; E: mental states not constricted to a given part of the brain
P: inverted qualia; E: functional difference

Disadvantages

P: inverted qualia; E: if mental states are to be reduced to functional states, scenario of inverted qualia shouldn't happen
P: qualia; E: not all mental states are functional states
P: knowledge argument; E: Mary gains knowledge from experience of colour (qualia)

Evaluation

Functionalism is strong
