Carter Vs Ford 1976 Election

Advantages

  • Carter was an outsider thus he was not tainted by watergate
  • His running mate was Walter Mondale
  • Carter had the support of the south and the working class
  • Carter defeated Wallace in the Democratic race
  • Carter had to solve big problems if he became president thus he needed a clear policy
  • Carter was mocked for being helped by the 'peanut brigade' as he came from a peanut farming family
  • Carter was also mocked as at school he would approach people with a grin and an extended hand and say ' Hi, I'm Jimmy Carter'

Disadvantages

  • Ford was too closely associated with Nixon's administration
  • Ford had also never been elected vice president or the president
  • Ford was criticised by conservatives over South Vietnam, Helsinki and Panama
  • Ford constantly used the presidential veto in office to block any reform that Congress wished to make
  • Ford made may mistakes, had several 'gaffs'
  • Ford didn't achieve much during his presidency

Evaluation

Carter narrowly wins the election by 49.9% of the vote compared to 47.9%, beating both ford and Eugene McCarthy the Independent Candidate.  This meant Carter was the first president from the deep south since Andrew Jackson, breaking tradition by walking down to the White House with his wife. However the US public had little confidence in government by 1976.
