Canning Town

Canning Town

Causes

  • London docklands regeneration project (eg Canary Wharf) created new tertiary white collar jobs as opposed to previous blue collar jobs (residents) such as the dock works
  • London docklands declined before as the shipping business moved elsewhere, due to containerisation and globalisation

Effects

  • Young working age residents leave in search of work and because they can
  • 1st generation migrants move in as relatively cheap housing
  • High unemployment (37% in full time) and low incomes (average £23,00) meant council revenue fell so spending on education and healthcare fell
  • Poor healthcare (9,500 deaths/year,20% prevented working due to health) and poor education (43% of adults no qualifications) leading to poverty cycle
  • Ethnic diversity originally led to ethnic enclaves so friction so loss of community
  • More crime
  • Long term:
  • Made things better as housing improved (10,000 new affordable family homes and older houses improved) and wealth (skills training, low cost offices built, shops and supermarkets built, bus services to workplaces) and education (GCSE grade achievement improved faster than uk average) and social (new health centre, library, community centre, playground, areas redesigned to make safer and calm traffic)

Overall summary

Overall, the character of Canning Town originally became drastically worse following London Docklands Project due to mismatch of skills leading to unemployment and poverty cycle, but after the CATCH project things improved and cultural differences broken down and jobs and education improved.
