Attempts made to undo Sullas reforms

  • The senate; increased to 600, automatic recruitment for ex-quaestors, approve bills before assemblies
  • Tribunes; can't veto or propose laws, removed judicial power, barred from further office
  • Cursus honorum; reaffirmed age limits, 10 year gap between consulships, quaestors to 20-praetors to 8
  • Proconsuls; senate decides appointments, annual commands, forbid govenors leaving provinces without approval, consuluar imperium remained superior to govenors
  • Courts; 7 quaestiones perpetuae established, procedures and penalities laid out for each crime- clear, juries of senators
  • Corn dole; abolished- poor had to reply on welathy patrons
  • Lepidus (cos 78) proposed to reinstate corn dole, restore tribunician power, restore land to proscribed and allow return of Marian exiles- ended up being declared enemy of state and fled
