Global Shift

Advantages

  • Waged work - Factory work provides a reliable, regular wage, since subsistence farming income is vulnerable to weather and disease.
  • Poverty reduction - Since 1990, 1bn ppl have been lifted out of extreme poverty, primarily due to global shift. Incomes rise due to waged work in factories, or income rises.
  • Education and training - TNCs invest in training + skills development to improve productivity, some skills are transferable. Economic growth generated by global shift is used to finance investment in education. Households use higher income to pay for more  children's schooling.Increase income tax and corporation tax used by government to fund state education.
  • Investment in infrastructure - Attracting manufacturing FDI requires initial investment in basic infrastructure. China built 11,000 km of new motorways in 2015 alone.

Disadvantages

  • Loss of productive land - constructing factories, infrastructure + housing occupies land previously used for agriculture. Land lost often flat, coastal or flood plains w highest fertility + productivity.Air + water pollution from industrial activity can = more agricultural land unusable.
  • Unplanned settlements - New manufacturing job opportunities = rural-urban migration. Rapid urban pop growth outpaces formal housing construction, = unplanned settlements eg slums.
  • Environmental or resource pressure - Industrial activity can =  air + water pollution. Pressure on natural resources, esp water supply, as new factories and offices demand resources
  • Rapid loss of tradition such as local food and dress as the pace of urban and industrial change is so rapid.
  • New developments tend to be unplanned and sometimes poorly built, lacking key public services.

Evaluation

Global Shift has benefitted some of those living in extreme poverty by introducing reliable waged work. It has also increased the amount of skilled and educated workers due to investment, and given more people the opportunity to receive a good education. However, its impact on agricultural land, the environment and unplanned settlements has not been positive.
