  • The American Revolution
    • 1607- Jamestown founded in Virginia, first English colony over following decades 13 colonies develop        1620- Pilgrim fathers land at plymouth rock, cape colony        1773- Boston Tea Party; leads to first continental congress the following year
      • 1775- American Revolution begins led by George Washington      1776- Thomas Jefferson's Declaration of independence issued by congress        1781- British defeat at Yorktown; rebel states codify Articles of confederation
        • 1787 'Founding Fathers' draw up a new constitution for the USA after the Philadelphia Convention     1789- George Washington elected first President        1791- Bill of Rights guarantees individual freedom
        • Articles of Confederation- 13 individual states running their own affairs, much looser than the constitution -> wasn't working so called a constitutional convention to create a strong federal govt. but not making it too powerful and balancing individual rights.
          • BoR = needed to discuss peoples rights rather than the things that govt. do, also needed in order to get ratification
      • Starts as a war of sovereignty and tax
      • Links to the Tea Party today wanting small govt. and lower taxes
