Democracy in the USA was limited under the control of the UK.

In the view of the British Governement, the American colonies existed principally for the economic benefit. the Colonies were obliged to pay tax to Britain but had no representation in British Government.

James Otis proclaimes 'Taxation without representaion is Tyranny'

On the 4th July 1776, the colonies issued the declaration of Independence declaring themselves 'free and independent states'

The articles of confederation were eventually ratified by the 13 independent states by March 1781, although hostilities with Great Britain were not formally concluded until the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
