  • Situation Ethics Strengths and Weaknesses
    • Strengths
      • Following Jesus' example
        • Following love makes sense for a Christian as it's a huge part of Jesus' biblical ethos
      • Common sense
        • It's common sense to put people over rules, more justice can be served
      • Flexable
        • When it comes to new techologies and situations. Legalistic theories tend to ban these new technologies as the theories become outdated.
      • Empowerment
        • Poeple are given the moral freedom to make choices within the safety of countries laws as guidelines.
      • Responsibility
        • "The only ethic for man to come of age" - JAT Robinson, referring to the moral responsibility is gives to become a better person.
    • Weaknesses
      • Love is too subjective
        • Different for everyone, hence can be difficult to apply in situations where you will be personally affected (bias) - It just allows us to pick what we want to do and label it as love's choice
      • Too much freedom
        • "If all men were saints then situation ethics would be the perfect ethic... but man has not yet come of age - Barclay on the issue that not everyone will use the moral freedom to do good
      • Too ambiguous
        • it doesn't tell us what we really ought to do when make a moral decision,  - doesn't help people when they need guidance
      • 'Drowning' in moral freedom
        • following structured rules provides comfort in times of confusion
      • Based on extreem examples
        • ISn't actually that effective in everyday situations - we're not faced with a hiroshima bomb everyday
