- Slow for several decades.
- Small fall in population in Italy, Russia, Portugal. Decrease of 4 million in Italy by 2020 forecast.
- Over the next 40 years, Germany could expect a population drop by almost 20% and Japan by 25%
- Over 50 nations with fertility rates of below 2.12. UN predicts this will be 88 by 2016.
- Fertility rate in China is under 2.12, but population will not start to decline until 2040.
- Low fertility rates in many Eastern European countries e.g. Ukraine, Romania. Economic uncertainty has made many women postpone or abandon having children.
- Fertility in the USA very high. American people more religious/ optimistic leading to desire for more children?
- The Japanese government has set aside £50 million to prevent population decline.
- Some European countries are offering increasing benefits/ incentives for a third child.

- Average LEDC growth rate (exc. China) is 1.8%
- In almost 50 countries, families of more than 6 children are seen as the norm.
- Overall, birth rates are declining in less developed countries.
- India approaching China as greatest population, with a population of over a billion.
- Expected to overtake China by 2050.
- In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, where literacy rates are high, fertility rates are falling sharply (education of women etc.)
- In the poor Hindi belt, however, tradition continues with large numbers of children.
