      • Why is it important ?
        • Meditation is important to Buddhists because it rids themselves of tanha and the distractions of the outside world.
        • It is performed widely, by monks and lay people, in both Theravada and Mahayana Buddhism.

      • What is meditation?
        • The aim of meditation is calm the mind, train it and develop it.

    • Samatha meditation ~ aims to develop calmness
      • common focus of samatha meditation is the breath. To be wary of the natural process of breathing.
      • By focusing on one thing only, negative thoughts and harmful mental states are kept out.· It is believed that samatha makes it easier to be calm and focused even when not meditating
      • Jihanas - they can reach advanced states of consciousness. Samatha helps the Buddhist work towards attaining nirvana.
    • Mettabhavana meditation ~ develops loving kindness
      • Start with things we feel less positive about:1. Ourselves.2. A good friend.3. Someone we feel ‘neutral’ about 4. A “difficult” person 5. All of the above equally, then finally all beings.
      • It helps Buddhists overcome one of the three poisons · It means . Good karma will be created and bad karma avoided.· It will support healthy relationships with others. Our suffering is reduced, as we do not cling on to arguments.
    • Vipassana meditation ~ insight meditation
      • Aims to develop insights into the nature of existence, to see things as they really are. In Theravada vipassana mediation, this focuses on the three marks of existenc
      • · It helps a Buddhist overcome ignorance .Gives Buddhists a deeper insight into the dharma.· Helps Buddhist overcome attachment and suffering. It is part of the Buddha’s teaching of “right concentration”
    • Buddhas and Bodhisattvas ~ focus for meditation
      • Physical representation, or rupa, of a Budda or bodhisattva. One purpose of this is to give the mediator a focus for their meditation. It also allows the meditator to reflect on the Buddha’s qualities.
      • The focus is not on the positive qualities that the bodhisattva represents,  this will enable the qualities in the meditator. Imagine themselves as being the Buddha is imagining oneself as an enlightened being = awakening your buddha-nature
