- Water could not infiltrate and travelled overland very quickly into water channels
- 1800 homes damaged by flood water
- Sewage treatment works was flooded causing contamination
- All 4 main access roads & railways were blocked making it difficult for emergency services to reach people
- 13 deaths
- Cost £3.2 billion
- 200 families were still living in caravans after a year
- RAF rescue helicopters were used in rescue efforts
- The army supplied food to towns cut off by flood water
- £800 million spent on flood defences
- Environment agency now holds flood prevention classes in the area
- Glos has set up a free flood warning scheme and 73,000 people have signed up
