      • William was very religious. He was respected for this as he lived in a very religious time
      • Churches influence increased with the Lanfrac reforms
    • Landownership
      • Landowners were the most powerful people in the country
        • He could - unlike in the Anglo-Saxon policy, redistribute the land
          • So, the powerful people were now he people HE wanted to be in that position
      • He could also forfeit anyone he wanted (eg. Anglo-Saxons)
