- Dhaka has it's worst rains for 50 yrs and on 13th Sep 350mm fell in 24 hrs
- Most of the country is the huge flood plain and delta of the rivers Ganges & Brahmaputra
- Snow melt in the Himalayas contributes to the River Ganges flooding
- Deforestation of the Himalayas
- 60% of the country was underwater
- 40% of Dhaka was under water
- 750 deaths
- More than 1 million children suffered from malnutrition & disease in the following months
- Main food crops of rice ,jute and sugar washed away
- Damage to schools & hospitals was estimated at $7billion
- United Nations launched an appeal for $74 million in aid but only received 20% of this
- Deforestation has been reduced in headwater areas
- Short term aid - shelters, food & medical supplies distributed
- 30 million displaced & homeless
- Water purification tablets distributed by the World Health Organisation
- Flood protection shelters built, stocked with emergency supplies
- Further levees built together with some new housing now built on stilts.
