    • Dhaka has it's worst rains for 50 yrs and on 13th Sep 350mm fell in 24 hrs
    • Most of the country is the huge flood plain and delta of the rivers Ganges & Brahmaputra
    • Snow melt in the Himalayas contributes to the River Ganges flooding
    • Deforestation of the Himalayas
    • 60% of the country was underwater
    • 40% of Dhaka was under water
    • 750 deaths
    • More than 1 million children suffered from malnutrition & disease in the following months
    • Main food crops of rice ,jute and sugar washed away
    • Damage to schools & hospitals was estimated at $7billion
    • United Nations launched an appeal for $74 million in aid but only received 20% of this
    • Deforestation has been reduced in headwater areas
    • Short term aid - shelters, food &  medical supplies distributed
    • 30 million displaced & homeless
    • Water purification tablets distributed by the World Health Organisation
    • Flood protection shelters built, stocked with emergency supplies
    • Further levees built together with some new housing now built on stilts.
