- We find out in this chapter that Adele is the daughter of a French opera-dancer Celine Varens who was once Mr Rochesters mistress
- When Celine Varnes abandoned Adele Rochester chose to take care of her although he does not believe she is his daughter
- Jane however doesn't judge Rochester's past. She is also fascinated by the fact Rochester wants to share with her everything
- That night Jane is disturbed by a 'demoniac laugh' outside her door
- Jane goes to investigate and sees that Rochester bed and curtains are on fire and he is nearly unconscious from smoke inhalation
- Jane wakes Rochester and puts the fire out which saves his life. He is both grateful and friendly towards Jane for saving his life
