    • KEY THEME: ISOLATION her loneliness and isolation is evident when she hides behind the curtains in a deserted room reading a book Bewick's history of British birds she likes the photos which are described as bleak and isolated places
    • KEY CHARCTER: JANE ist is clear that she has a strong personality. she refuses to be dominated by her elder cousin John but does recongise him as the bully and stands up to him
