- weather is gloomy and miserable (pathetic fallacy) so Jane is shut inside
- Charlotte Bronte uses a lot of descriptions of the settings and the weather throughout the novel to help establish mood and to reflect upon some of the major themes
- she is isolated and unhappy she is not welcome in the Reed family
- she hides behind a curtain in the library reading one of her uncles books (she loves reading)

- Jane fights back and attacks John with passion however passionate is not a attractive quality

- KEY THEME: ISOLATION her loneliness and isolation is evident when she hides behind the curtains in a deserted room reading a book Bewick's history of British birds she likes the photos which are described as bleak and isolated places
- KEY CHARCTER: JANE ist is clear that she has a strong personality. she refuses to be dominated by her elder cousin John but does recongise him as the bully and stands up to him
