  • Jack
    • Wants to lead a dictatorship
      • He is "Ugly without silliness" and his eyes are "turning, or ready to turn, to anger". Suggesting he can be bad-tempered and nasty
      • Bosses the choir around even though they don't actually like him and voted with "dreary obedience"
      • Out of all the boys "the most obvious leader was Jack" and he claims that he "ought to be chief"
      • Hates Ralph being in charge and often challenges him, saying as he can't provide meat he has no right to tell him what to do
      • He makes up rules to suit eg saying the conch "doesn't count" at the end of the island and rejects them all together "******** to the rules!"
      • Jack doesn't see the value in building shelters or keeping the fire going - he is rejecting civilisation
      • Uses the boys fear to control them eg saying "my hunters will protect you from the beast" to get them to join his tribe
        • ABUSES POWER - contextual to Hitler
      • Conflict between Ralph and Jack is between two different types of leadership. Ralph is voted in and tries to do what is best for the group- get them rescued. Jack takes power for himself and just wants to have a good time
        • Prefers fun to responsibility
          • Wants to enjoy time on island- first character to forget about the possibility of rescue
          • Represents the point of view that people should be able to do as they please regardless of morals or logic
          • Thinks he is a good leader however doesn't take care of the weaker boys as a leader should
            • Bullies Piggy
            • Calls the little uns "cry babies" for being afraid the beast
            • Doesn't sort out shelters for his tribe

        • Jacks aggressive language foreshadows his violent behaviour later on in the novel
      • Jack becomes more evil as the book progresses. Represents the evil that Golding believed was inside everyone, and that would come out if the rules of society were take away
      • When he has his own tribe he gives up pretending to be fair and rules as dictator, uses violence to control tribe eg Wilfred tied up and beaten for no reason
        • After Piggy's death, Jack hurls spear straight at Ralph. His violence is open and deliberate
      • Strong sense of pride
        • Jacks pride makes him cruel. He treats his tribe like servants eg making them say "the chief has spoken". He doesn't see them as human beings- maybe why he can hurt them so easily
        • Losing vote damages his pride, sets him against Ralph from beginning of story
          • Challenges Ralph's authority and gets angry when criticized.
    • Obsessed with hunting
      • Goes further then any other boy, first to injure a pig and first to kiill one
      • Starts to have a "compulsion to track down and kill" A "madness" comes into his eyes when he thinks about hunting. Early sign of savagery which grows through out the novel

  • Makes fun of cowards  and can't bear when Ralph suggests h'es afraid to go and find the beast
  • Golding describes him as an animal- "bloodthirsty snarling" "ape-like". Once he paints his face he doesn't see himself anymore he sees an "awesome stranger". Allowing him not to feel responsible for his actions
