Introduction

Jack is power-hungry and loves the feeling of being in charge. He is not a good or kind leader and he represents evil in the novel.

  • Jack always wants to be in control

Jack is 'ugly without silliness' and his eyes are 'ready to turn to anger'. This suggests that he is bad tempered and a bad character. He bosses around the choir and vote for him with 'dreary obedience' suggesting that he inflicted fear upon them and manipulated them to vote for him. He claims that he 'ought to be chief' He makes up rules to suit himself, 'doesnt count' and '******** to the rules'. He represents barbarity. 

Arrogant: 'i ought to be chief'

Proud: 'freckles...disspeared under a blush of mortification'

Violent: 'I cut the pigs throat'

Controlling: 'What d'you mean by not joining my tribe?'

  • He prefers to have fun rather than be responsible

Jack only wants to enjoy himself on the island and is the first character to forget about the possibility of rescue…
