  • Infection and Response
    • Spreading Diseases
      • Viruses - tiny, particles that produce rapidly within the body, invades host cells to make new virus particles
      • Bacteria - small living cells that either damage cells directly or by toxins. Toxins can damage cells and tissues
      • Fungi - single celled organisms that have a body made up of hyphae. Hyphae are able to grow and penetrate tissues, like human skin or surface of plants
      • Protists - single celled eukaryotic organisms that has a nucleus, transfers disease by vector by damaging our tissues
      • Ways of spreading disease: Direct Contact, Air, Water
      • Examples of diseases spread: Cholera from water, Flu and colds from the air and Athlete's Foot from direct contact
      • Ways to prevent infection spread: Disease Vectors, Vaccination and Isolation
    • Types of Pathogens
      • Tobacco  Mosaic Virus (TMV) - affecting plants by the discolouration of the leaves, affecting plants growth and photosynthesis cannot take place. Symptoms; Discolouration on leaves. No specific treatment, but prevented by good field hygiene and pest control.
      • HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) - spread by sexual contact or exchange of body fluids. Symptoms; flu-like symptoms. No specific treatment, but can be controlled with antiretroviral drugs, prevented by not sharing fluids/ using condoms.
      • Measles - spread by breathing in droplets from sneezes or coughs. It can be fatal. Symptoms; fever and red skin rash. No specific treatment, and is prevented using vaccinations.
    • More types of Pathogens
      • Bacterial Diseases
        • Salmonella - spread by food prepared in unhealthy conditions. Symptoms; fever, stomach cramps, vomiting and diarrhoea.
        • Gonorrhoea - sexually transmitted disease, can be prevented using condoms. Symptoms; pain when urinating, yellow or green discharge from vagina or penis. Treated with antibiotics.
      • Fungal Diseases
        • Rose black spot - spread by water or air, causes plants' growth to slow and harder for it to synthesise. Symptoms; purple or black spots on leaves. Treated by removing affected leaves and using fungicides.
      • Protists Diseases
        • Malaria - spread by the female mosquito. It transfers the infection into the blood stream when it bites them. It can be life-threatening. Symptoms; fevers and shaking. Preventing from spreading by using mosquito nets and breeding.
