  • Spectroscopy
    • Some elements emit distinctive coloured flames when they are heated.
      • The light emitted from the flame of an element produces a characteristic line spectrum.
      • Scientists realised some time ago that each element has its own unique spectrum.
      • The study of spectra has been increasingly used to analyse unknown substances and discover new elements. E.g. the line spectrum for helium was first seen in light from the sun, before it was discovered on earth.
