What is meant by the term, 'Instrumental Methods'?
using machines
1 of 8
Where do we use instrumental methods/analysis?
Science Research labs, medical labs, police forensics work, environmental analysis & testing products in Industry
2 of 8
What are the 3 advantages of using Instrumental Methods?
They are more sensitive(detect even the tiniest amounts of a substance),fast(tests can even be automated) and accurate(don't involve human error, as manual analysis does).
3 of 8
Give 4 types of instrumental methods.
Infrared Spectroscopy, Ultraviolet Spectroscopy, Gas Chromatography
4 of 8
What is Infrared Spectroscopy?
This method produces a graph(spectrum) showing which frequencies of infrared radiation a molecule will absorb/transmit. You can use the absorbance pattern on the graph to identify the molecule.
5 of 8
What is Ultraviolet Spectroscopy?
Similar to infrared spectroscopy but uses UV instead
6 of 8
What is Gas Chromatography?
Used to separate out the chemicals in a mixture. This method produces a chromatogram(graph) with one peak for each chemical. The retention time(time taken for chemical to pass thru machine) is used to identify each chemical.
7 of 8
What is Mass Spectrometry?
A technique used to find relative molecular mass of a mystery compound(or relative atomic mass of a mystery element).
