  • Because of the war of the roses the power of the king was limited at the beginning of Henry's reign
  • Nobels power had gained a massive amount of power in the beginning of Henry's reign, it was important to him to limit that control and gain back the stability of the monarchy
  • However, Henry relied on the nobility in order to exercise power on his behalf to control the regions Henry had to let them do this to keep control but also had to remain within a position of power above the nobility
  • Henry released Yorkist earl of surrey from the tower where he had been imprisoned because of the battle of bosworth - the amount of magnates Henry could trust was limited he had to take this risk in order to effectively govern the regions of England
  • Henry would spies watching the nobility to make sure they were going as the king has asked
  • He would also control them through the use of bonds and recognianses
  • Maintained peace in the country side
  • Appointed by country basis
  • JP's were mostly local gentry - They stayed loyal because of the status and respect the role brought them within their local communities
  • Met four times a year to deliver judgements and disputes at the quarter sessions
  • Replaced previously established sheriffs
