  • CARBO-HYDRATES.
    • Starches.
      • -Not water soluble.
      • -Require being chemically altered before digestion e.g. rice.
      • -Is a POLYSAC-CARIDE.
        • -Many molecules of glucose linked together.
      • Examples:     -Bread.           -Rice.             -Pasta.           -Cereal.
    • Non- Starch Polysaccarides (NSP's).
      • -Substances such as fibre.
      • -Some are insoluble + connot be broken down by digestion.
      • -Pass through the body unchanged e.g. sweetcorn.
      • -Main one is cellulose.
        • -Gives plants structural strength.
      • Examples:        -Bran Products.        -Peas.             -Beans.          -Wholemeal Bread.
    • Sugars.
      • -Soluble in water.
      • -Known as saccharides.
      • -Simple Sugar = monosaccharide.
      • -Chemical Formula of glucose:     C6 H12 O6
      • Examples:        -Grapes.       -Cakes.          -Jam.              -Chocolate.     -Honey.          -Apricots.
      • REMEMBER:   -Sucrose = glucose + fructose.          -Lactose = glucose + galactose.       -Maltose = 2 glucose molecules.
    • Functions.
      • -Main source of energy through respiration.
      • -Used to transport, protect + recognition.
      • -Complex carbs reduce cholesterol.
      • -Made up of Carbon, Hydrogen + Oxygen.
