Equality
Equality means to ensure that a person is treated fairly, given the same opportunities regardless of differences and treated according to their individual needs. Individuals are not discriminated against due to their differences.

Diversity
Diversity is all about recognising and respecting individual differences. Valuing diversity involves accepting and respecting differences by seeing everyone as a unique individual.

Empowerment
To give someone the authority or control to do something, which encourages an individual to make decisions and to take control of their lives.

Independence
Not relying on others, and having the freedom to make your own decisions.

Inclusion
Ways of working that provide individuals with equal opportunities so that they are involved and feel like they belong.

Respect
Having regard for the feelings, wishes and rights of others.

Dignity
Care that promotes and does not undermine a persons self-respect.

Legislation
A collection of laws passed by Parliament, which states the rights and entitlements of an individual.

Rights
Rights are what everyone is entitled to and are set out by legislation.

Choice, Confidentiality, Protection from abuse and harm, Equal and fair treatment, Consulation and Right to life.

What are the Values of Care?
The values of care are core principles that underpin the work of those providing health services. They are a set of guidelines and ways of working for care settings and their staff. Ensures individuals receive appropriate care.

The 3 values of care
Promoting equality and diversity, Promoting individual rights and beliefs and Maintaining confidentiality.

'Need-to-know' Basis
When information is only given to people who are directly involved with the care and support of the individual, if and when it is needed. Access to information is restricted to help maintain confidentiality.

PAT Testing
Portable appliance testing is the term used to describe the checking of electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use.

Child Paramount
Paramount principles are whereby the child's needs come first and the setting should use a child-centred approach.

Advocate
Those who represent the views, needs and interests of individuals who are unable to represent themselves.

Informal Support
Informal support is care given by those who are not paid to do so and who are not professionally trained. E.g- friends, family and neighbours etc.

Abuse
This refers to a negative and harmful way of behaving towards another individual. There are many forms of abuse; physical, emotional, sexual and verbal.

Direct Discrimination
This involves intentionally putting someone at a disadvantage or treating them unfairly based on their differences.

Indirect Discrimination
This is where a policy, practice or rule applies to everybody but has a disadvantage on some people or a particular group.

Prejudice
This is a negative attitude or dislike of an individual or group.

Sterotyping
This is where generalisations are made about a particular group of people.

Labelling
This is the negative approach that identifies people as members of a particular group, with the assumption that they are 'all the same'.

Bullying
This involves threatening, intimidating, humiliating or frightening others; it is a repeated behaviour intended to physically or psychologically cause hurt to an individual.

Ofsted
Ofsted carries out inspections that rate child care settings and schools from 'outstanding' to 'inadequate'. They then publish reports which indicate what needs to be improved and they can put the school into special measures... then re-inspected.

EHRC has a website that provides information , advice and guidance about discrimination.

NICE
The main responsibilities of NICE are to assess new drugs and treatments as they become available and to improve outcomes for people using NHS services.

Mentoring
Mentoring is a process in which an experienced person shares their knowledge and skills with another person to enable them to develop their skills and improve their practice.

Monitoring
Involves checking the progress or quality of care practice over time. Monitoring can involve; observations, asking service users their opinions and feedback forms.

Performance Management
Performance Management is an ongoing process between a care worker and their manager. It involves one-to-one meetings and observations over time to provide feedback on performance and to identify targets for improvement.
