What is a pathogen?
-Causes communicable diseases -Within but can be between species, and vectors transfer them.
1 of 14
Name the four types of Pathogen
Bacteria, Virus, Fungi and Protoctista
2 of 14
Two common features of Bacteria
-Prokaryotic -Loose DNA
3 of 14
Three methods of attack (Bacteria)
-Produce toxins -Breaking down Host cell membrane -Changing Host DNA so it cannot divide
4 of 14
Three diseases caused (Bacteria)
-TB -Bacterial meningitis -Ring rot
5 of 14
Two common features of Viruses
-RNA -No ribosomes, is it even alive?
6 of 14
Three methods of attack (Viruses)
-Takes over cell metabolism -Virus DNA into Host DNA, make more virus
7 of 14
Three diseases caused (Viruses)
-HIV/AIDS -Influenza -Tobacco mosaic virus
8 of 14
One common feature of Fungi
-Eukaryotic
9 of 14
Two methods of attack (Fungi)
-Digest living cells -Produce toxins that affect host cells
10 of 14
Three diseases caused (Fungi)
-Black sigatoka -Ring worm -Athletes foot
11 of 14
Two common features of protoctista
-Eukaryotic -Own genetic material
12 of 14
Three methods of attack (protoctista)
-Take over host cells and break them down -Digest and utilise host cell contents
13 of 14
Two diseases caused (protoctista)
-Malaria -Potato/Tomato Late Blight
