Encoding Data is data replaced by short codes.

Masses of information is collected and encoded into data that is quick and easy to enter into a computer

Advantages of encoding data
Saves space | Faster to enter | Less input errors | Analyse data efficiently | Greater data consistency

Disadvantages of encoding data
Value judgements | Coarsens data

What does coarsening data mean?
Fitting data into the closest category therefore loosing precision
