What were Khrushchev's cultural thaws?
1953-4 govt allowed new novels to be published, e.g. 'The Thaw' criticised Stalin. After secret speech novel 'not by bread alone' was critical of party bureaucracy under Stalin. But some went to far, e.g Doctor Zhivago criticised Lenin.

What was the nonconformity in 1950s?
Alcoholics / lazy govt officials = the nonconformity he wanted to challenge. Poster campaign encouraging ppl to challenge it. Campaign against 'loose women' who wore western clothes, as he set it was a sign they were slags.

What was Brezhnev's view on Khrushchev's 'thaws'?
Brezhnev ended this freedom. Trial of Daniel = arrested for producing 'anti soviet propaganda', sent to labour camp.

What were dissident artists?
Despite end of freedom, artists continued to make work secretly. E.g Mitki Collective put on shows in Leningrad exposing hypocrisy of communist officials. Some did theatre in woods.
