Timber
The new forest has 100 enclosures where trees are grown to provide wood. These enclosures provide 50,000 tonnes of timber every year

The wood is sold to businesses and local mills, which make fencing products

Recreation
The new forest attracts 20 million visitors each year for leisure/recreation

Leisure
Activities include cycling, walking, wildlife watching, horse riding and water sports

Cattle 2,500 and pigs are allowed to roam the open forest and graze in the summer and autumn months

Ways of sustainable management
Replanting trees, selective felling, cycle routes/walk paths, leashes, code of conduct

Replanting trees
When trees are cut down and sold as wood some of the land is replanted with native trees which ensures that wood will be available to businesses now and the future

Selective felling
Some trees are removed giving other trees more space to grow meaning not the overall forest is not damaged and will be available to supply wood for future generations

Cycle routes/ walk paths
Recreation is sustainable because cyclists and walkers are not permitted to ride/walk over the open forest; they have to cycle ways or paths which protects the forest plants being damaged by bikes or walkers

Leashes
Dogs should be kept on a lead and they are not allowed into the most important breeding areas of the forest when birds are nesting.

Code of conduct
It advises visitors how to act responsibly e.g. closing gates, taking litter home etc.
