What are proteins?
Proteins are chains of amino acids.
1 of 14
How does the amino sequence decide the final shape of a protein?
The order of the amino acids change the shape and function of the final protein.
2 of 14
What is a gene?
A gene is a section of DNA which codes for a protein.
3 of 14
Give two examples of protein groups
Structural and enzymes.
4 of 14
State the properties of a catalyst.
A catalyst is a substance that speeds up a reaction while remaining unchanged.
5 of 14
Define the term enzyme.
An enzyme is a biological catalyst.
6 of 14
What is the active site in an enzyme?
The active site is the part of the enzyme that the substrate fits into for the reaction to take place.
7 of 14
Describe the theory of the lock and key.
The lock and key theory is about enzyme action. The substrate fits into the active site (like a key in a lock) forming an enzyme-substrate complex. The reaction then takes place and the enzyme remains unchanged but the substrate is made into products
8 of 14
Explain the specificity of enzymes.
The shape of the active site on an enzyme is complementary to its specific substrate(s).
9 of 14
Define degradation reaction
Degradation is when larger are broken down into more than one smaller molecule in a degradation reaction.
10 of 14
Describe synthesis reaction.
Synthesis is when more than one smaller molecule is joined to produce a larger molecule.
11 of 14
Describe the optimum conditions for an enzyme.
Enzymes work best around body temp and around at around neutral pHs.
12 of 14
Define the term denatured.
When enzymes are placed in high temperatures or very acidic/alkali pH, an enzyme becomes denatured
13 of 14
Why does an enzyme become denatured and not die?
They do not die because they are not alive in the first place.
