The Cardiac system

?
Systole & diastole
These are 2 phases of the cardiac cycle and they occur as the heart beats pumping blood through-out the system. The systole occurs when the heart contracts. The diastole occurs when the heart relaxes after contraction.
1 of 6
Atria contract
The atria begins at the contract and the blood pumps into the ventricles. The ventricles contract raising the pressure and the valves shut to prevent backflow
2 of 6
diastole
diastole is when muscles in the heart relax and this allows for blood to flow into the atria or some ventricles as the valves aren't blocking the blood.
3 of 6
Atrial systole
Both atria contract. Blood flows from the atria into the ventricles. Backflow of blood into the vein is prevented by closure of the valves in the veins
4 of 6
Ventricular systole
Both ventricles contract. The atrio-ventricular valves are pushed shut by pressurised blood in the ventricles. Blood flows from the ventricles into the arteries
5 of 6
Atrioventricular valves
These open and close causing pressure to change. As the remains open the atria contract and increase the pressure then as the ventricles begin to contract the pressure rises above the atria and the blood starts to flow upwards- blood can't flow back.
