What is systole?
The contraction of the heart
1 of 25
What is diastole?
The relaxation of the heart
2 of 25
What are the three main stages of the cardiac cycle?
- Diastole - Atrial systole - Ventricular systole
3 of 25
Which valves control blood flow from the verntricles to the pulmonary arteries and aorta?
Semi-lunar valves
4 of 25
What happens during diastole?
Atria are relaxed and fill with blood from pulmonary vein and vena cava
5 of 25
What happens to the pressure inside the atria during diastole?
It increases as the blood is filling them up
6 of 25
Once the pressure inside the atria exceed that of the ventricles what happens?
The atrioventricular valves open allowing blood to pass into the ventricles
7 of 25
What happens during atrial systole?
Atria contract, ventricles relax and this forces the remaining blood into the ventricles
8 of 25
What happens after the ventricles fill with blood?
They contract simultaneously
9 of 25
What effect does the increase in blood pressure have in the ventricles?
It forces the atrioventricular vales shut preventing the backflow of blood from the ventricles back into the atria
10 of 25
What causes the heart beat sound?
The shutting of the atrioventricular valves
11 of 25
What happens to the pressure inside the ventricles due to the atrioventricular valves closing?
It increases more
12 of 25
What does this cause?
Once the pressure exceeds that in the pulmonary artery and aorta, blood is forced from the ventricles into them via the semi-lunar valves
13 of 25
What shape are valves?
Cuspid shape
14 of 25
What two sides are there to a valve?
Convex and concave
15 of 25
When blood pushes againt the concave side do the valves open or close?
Close
16 of 25
When blood pushes against the convex side do the valves open or close?
Open
17 of 25
What three main valves are there in the cardiac cycle?
- Atrioventricular valves - Semi-lunar valves - Pocket valves
18 of 25
Where are the atrioventricular valves found?
In between the atria and the ventricles
19 of 25
Where are the semi-lunar valves found?
In the pulmonary artery and aorta
20 of 25
Where are pocket valves found?
Inside the veins throughout the venous system
21 of 25
What is cardiac output?
The volume of blood pumped from one ventricle in one minute
22 of 25
What is the equation for cardiac output?
Cardiac output = heart rate x stroke volume
23 of 25
What are the units for cardiac output?
dm3 min-1
24 of 25
What is stroke volume?
The volume of blood pumped out at each beat
25 of 25
