what is a surface
an inteface-boundary between 2 phases- in which one pf the phases is a gas
1 of 6
why does surface tension come about. whta is it represented as and what is its units. what is it effected by
surface molecules hgave no like neighbours above intermolecular forces are directed across and down. gamma and mNm-1. effected by temp and surfactants(lowers gamma)
2 of 6
what are the two ways of measuring interfacial tension, what do they measure
the wilhelmy plate or the du nouy ring. meaures the contact angle
3 of 6
what is wettability, contact angle and wettability
tendency of a liquid to adhere to a solid surface. larger contact angle, lower wettability
4 of 6
describe surfactants
they are amphiphillic- both hydrophbic and phillic portions in same molceuel. hydrophillic parts bond with water but not as well as just the water as bulky lipophillic parts get in way, so lowers gamma.
5 of 6
when do miscelles form, waht effects this
when surface is saturated with surfactants, they excess sinks through liquid pahse and self aggregate to miscelles. occurs at cmc. larger surfactants mean lower cmc
