Amateurism vs Professionalism in Rugby
In 1895 the 'broken-time' issue split the game. Rugby Union organisers refused to pay the players for their time off work while playing. This lead to the creation of the Rugby League, which allowed professional playing.

Rugby that was always professional. Very popular in the industrial towns of northern England the the Midlands.

Rugby Union
Rugby that was played by amateurs. Very popular among the Welsh people. However, it suffered badly in Wales as a result of Depression (1930s), when many talented players joined professional clubs in northern England.
