What is amateur?
Means they werent paid. Only the well to do played this as they could afford to take the time of work for leisure. Took part in events like 'wibledon tennis champions'

What is professionalism?
Paid for playing a sport (football,cricket,boxing) usually working men as they needed payment to make up for time missed from work

Explain why some people did not like the idea of professional sport in the early 20th century?
Thought it would create a bad practice as you would get people trying to win at all cost - for example cheating, over competative and having bad sportsmanship. People also started to rely on the sport for their income.

Where and when was rugby union played?
In english and welsh public schools (posh schools) it was played in the mid 19th century. It was an amateur game and played for free. By 1900 it was a popular sport in south and west wales.

Who played rugby union?
Usually working men as it gave them strength and determination.villages usually had their own teams. Brought different class people together, popular teams were Cardiff and swansea
