Describe opportunity sampling
Participants are used who are there at the time and the place that the study is being conducted.
1 of 13
What are the strengths of opportunity sampling?
Easy in terms of time and money.
2 of 13
What are the weaknesses of opportunity sampling?
Biast sample may be produced as researcher may choose people so unrepresentative. Participants may decline to take part so sample size may be small and more biased as a certain type of person may agree to take part.
3 of 13
Define volunteer samples
Participants volunteer to be part of the study who have volunteered when asked or responded to an advert.
4 of 13
What are the strengths of volunteer sampling?
Quick and easy to use, can reach a wide range of participants.
5 of 13
What are weaknesses of volunteer sampling?
Participants who volunteer may not be representative of the population.
6 of 13
What is random sampling?
Sampling where everyone has an equal chance of being chosen.
7 of 13
What is a strength of random sampling?
Provides and unbiased, representative sample.
8 of 13
What are weaknesses associated with random sampling?
Can be very time consuming, especially with a large population and could be impossible to carry out.
9 of 13
What is stratified sampling?
Classifying the population into categories and then choosing a sample which consists of participants from each category in the same proportions that they appear in the population.
10 of 13
What is a strength of stratified sampling?
The sample should be representative of the target population.
11 of 13
What are weaknesses associated with stratified sampling?
Can be very time consuming as categories have to be identified and calculated. If you do not have the details of people in the target population, you would struggle to conduct a stratified sample.
12 of 13
What is a snowball sample?
Used if population is not easy to contact where one person will tell their friends who link to the subject of the study, who will tell their friends and so on.
