The tripartite personality is developing. If a fixation during this stage occurs, this may result in an adult not being capable to love another person and not be capable of entering a relationship.

What happens to young boys during the phallic stage?
During the phallic stage, a young boy comes to desire his mother and regards his father as a rival, wishing him dead. This wish creates anxiety in the young boy. This is called the Oedipus complex.

How is the Oedipus complex resolved? What does it mean if the complex is resolved?
The Oedipus complex is resolved when when the young boy come to identify with his father. This resolution means that the young boy grows up to be able to develop normal, health friendships and heterosexual relationships.
