Plant Survival- Harvesting Light

?
What light do plant pigments absorb
400nm and 700nm
1 of 12
Why do plants absorb 400nm and 700nm of light?
Because these are photosynthetically active radiation which drives photosynthesis
2 of 12
Describe the structure of the epidermis and how it is specialised to harvest light
Top cell layer reflects and funnels light into tissue below, reflect and refract light around cell as it hits periphery of palisade cells (increased amount captured)
3 of 12
What are the 5 recognised forms of chlorophyll?
Bacteriochlorophyll, chlorophyll a, b, c and d
4 of 12
What does the storm contain?
Enzymes for carbon assimilation (takes place in pool of metabolites) and many pigments that expand the absorption of the visible spectrum for improved light harvesting
5 of 12
What makes up the antenna complex?
Chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids
6 of 12
What is the photosynthetic light response curve?
Carbon assimilation against light intensity
7 of 12
What is the point of light saturation in the curve?
Where photosynthesis rates have reached its optimum and no matter how much light intensity is increased, the rate will not increase
8 of 12
What is the light compensation point?
Where the curve starts (where there is a net gain of carbon), so where the amount of carbon lost in respiration is the same as carbon assimilation in photosynthesis
9 of 12
What is photo-inhibition of photosynthesis?
If shade leaves were in the sun and visa versa, they will never be able to achieve photosynthetic capabilities of the other and may even be damaged by light
10 of 12
Describe the features of a sun leaf
Thick, many cell layers, high structural investment, tightly packed cells, less granal stacking, high chl a:b ratio, orientated away from sun
11 of 12
Describe the features of a shade leaf
Thin, few cell layers, low structural investment, plenty of air space, more granal stacking, low chl a:b ratio, favours light harvesting
