Plants and their environment

?
Describe the findings from De Candolle
Saw that shape and morphology were adaptive (modular growth) and he categorised plants based on their environmental conditions
1 of 14
Megatherms
Much heat (rainforests)
2 of 14
Mesotherms
Middle heat (grasslands)
3 of 14
Microtherms
Low heat (forest)
4 of 14
Hekistotherms
Least heat (tundra)
5 of 14
Xerophiles
Low water
6 of 14
What is a biome?
A group of similar ecosystems
7 of 14
What is the arctic tundra and alpine mountains climate like?
Long days in summer, short days in winter, huge temperature variations, winds, soil nutrients and water hard to obtain
8 of 14
How have plants adapted to surviving in these conditions?
Small, low temperature optimums, solar racking, small leaves, freezing tolerance, dormancy
9 of 14
Describe the rainforests environment
Very hot, humid, 12 hours of light a day, lots of nutrients but there is a lot of competition
10 of 14
How have plants adapted to living in the rainforest?
Large leaves (minimal light), drip tips so water can run off them (prevent algae growth), Prop roots (shallow roots where nutrients are but allows them to grow high w/ support), carnivory (eat insects), epiphytism (allows plants to climb, nutrients)
11 of 14
What is the environment like in the desert?
Dry, hot, lac of nutrients, temperature extremes
12 of 14
How have plants adapted to living in the desert?
Reduction of transpiring surfaces, CAM photosynthesis, fog capturers (water condenses on spine), spines and hairs to capture moisture, High temp optima for photosynthesis, light reflecting surfaces, annual life cycle (mass germination)
13 of 14
What is parallel evolution?
Totally unrelated plants can end up looking very similar to each other due to adaption to similar environments
